The Project, the Cause, and the Solution

Our group, the Nittany Lions, were tasked to come up with a solution to some of the most pressing issues facing the agriculture industry in developing markets. After much research, we decided to focus on the problem of waterlogging and soil salinity. Millions of acres of land have been lost due to this problem, especially in South Asia and more specifically in Pakistan. After a monsoon or flood, groundwater starts to overflow and rise above the soil, afterward, it is evaporated by the sun and leaves back salt on the soil - making the soil effectively useless. To make the situation worse, cash crop farmers then buy this land from subsistence farmers at a cheap price and fertilize it and rejuvenate it back to normal. This problem needs to end especially because this is not a big problem in developing countries because of storage solutions that cost thousands of dollars. However, the costs and the hard work required did not hinder me and my group to design an irrigation and storage system for the subsistence farmers of the region.
